A Wednesday of April , we were in Palermo and we decided to spend our afternoon at the Biopark of Sicily .
The "Bioparco di Sicilia" is a zoo that is located in Carini ( near Palermo ) . The zoo is very close to Punta Raisi Airport .
The Zoo is next to the Motorway A29 (Palermo-Trapani). Just outside the exit of Carini must immediately make a turn very tight (not shown) to the right, and then take the parallel street (Via Amerigo Vespucci). Drive 3.5 km and you are at the entrance of the zoo.
Zoo is open (for season 2015) from 14th of March to 5th of December. Opening at 9.30 and closing variable depending on season and day of week.
Just next to the entrance of the Zoo there is a parking for cars. It is not too large and not guarded. We had no trouble finding place saw the low turnout that day. Access to the parking, at least that day, was completely free. Not too far in any case there is' another car park that seems free too.
The ticket price we felt it was suitable for the park: € 8.50 for adults, € 6.50 for kids and people over 65. Children from 2 years old pay.
Kids under 2 are free.
At the entrance we were given a map of the park that essentially divides the park just in macro-areas and indicates the services. At the Ticket Office we asked if they were organizing activities such as workshops, shows, feeding etc but we were told that these activities are proposed only for special events or occasions.
The park, as shown in the map, is divided into several macro. The animals are in general divided according to area of origin. The trails are well kept, clean and suitable for stroller.
There are so many kinds of animals: dromedary, Lama, parrots, zebras, kangaroos, snakes, Crane, Monkey, Suricata, Lemurs. Each species is accompanied by a poster describing its characteristics and origin. The animals seem well cared for. The spaces available to them are generally very large but in some cases a little 'unkempt. Various spaces were filled with weeds very high that among other things also prevented the observation of the animals. The meerkats for example we could not see much of weeds ..
The animals that we liked more 'are a pair of Chimpanzees: Whiskey and Mango, housed in a cage very wide, that have delighted us with their acrobatics.
In the bottom of the park there 's also a farm area that is apparently used as educational farm with schools.
In addition to the animals there 's also (as you enter on the left) an area dedicated to dinosaurs that children especially appreciate.
In the park, in several areas, there are also several play areas and picnic (in good condition). Near the picnic areas there are no drinking water fountains.
Food and Drink service is practically nonexistent. Although the park is very large there is' only one small bar (in the square in front of the entrance). The Bar has a few products. Coffee ?? If you really want coffee, you have to take it from a vending machine (such as those from office). We opted for one juice and 2 Caffè Zero (ice coffee). The Coffee Zero were from the previous season and you could tell from the very close deadline (July 2015). They were evidently kept the winter temperature is too low and it was impossible to eat them ... Gone in the rubbish bin.
The toilets are absolutely insufficient for the size of the park. There 's only one point (near the entrance) and then nothing !! If you are for example in the farm (which is on the opposite side of the park) and you have an urgent need better hide behind a bush. No changing-table or Mini toilet.
Although Bar & Toilet leave much to be desired, overall the visit was positive thanks to the size of the park and the variety of animals present.
